Grimes Canoe Base Outing

On May 28th, the mighty oarsmen of Troop 227 drove down to Flatwoods, TN to test their knowledge and skill by navigating the Buffalo River.  On the way to Grimes Canoe Base, we watched a storm front coming up from the Tennessee River.  The evening sky put on quite a show of lighting and thunder!  After setting up camp and enjoying a simple meal of pb&j sandwiches, the scouts conducted a campfire program, with the troop’s bugler closing the night by playing taps.

The next morning, we were carried seven miles upstream to launch at a place called Blue Rock.  It’s called Blue Rock because there is a painted blue rock in the middle of the river!  It was interesting to see quite a large number of people tent camping along the river banks.  As we paddled downstream, we saw evidence of the recent flood, with large trees uprooted.  The most amazing site was looking up, underneath an old abandoned bridge.  The bridge had numerous trees and limbs tangled together, with a full, size bull suspended from the bridge.  Apparently, the bull was caught up in the flood, and could not make it to higher ground.  Before arriving back at Grimes, the troop stopped at a sandbar to skip rocks and to cook lunch.

Without a doubt, Troop 227 will return next year to the scenic Buffalo River!

A Helping Hand

During the month of May, fellow scouts from Troop 227 rolled up their sleeves to help those in need. One group of scouts helped an individual who recently moved into an assisted living facility.  The scouts did landscaping work around her house, so it could be put on the market to sell.  Another scout helped members of a congregation restore their church building from the recent flood.  Other scouts helped someone move debris out of her basement.  Such random acts of kindness make lasting impressions on those around us.  Keep up the good work!!!
