District Camporee

 

During the weekend of October 17th, scouts from Troop 227 joined forces with other troops at the Parish Wilderness Reservation, near Rock Island State Park.  This weekend commemorated the Dan Beard District Fall Camporee along the banks of the Caney Fork River.  The main event was a merit badge university, allowing scouts to take courses such as photography, fingerprinting, crime prevention, even dog care!  During the weekend, scouts worked together to create a MacGyver Gadget which required some duct tape and creative thinking.  You’ll have to ask one of the scouts what the gadget empowered them to do!  Later that night, scouts enjoyed the campfire program, which included the retirement of six American flags.  Without a doubt, the highlight of the weekend was establishing friendships with other scouts within our community.

 

Support Our Local Troops

 

As many of you know, Thelbert Hassell has given much time and support to the Smyrna military personnel stationed in Iraq.  Our scouts have been sending birthday cards to these soldiers for the past few months. Mr. Hassell puts together care packages to be shipped to members of the Smyrna unit.  The shipping cost per package is $11.95.  If you would like to help pay the shipping cost for a care package, you can make your check payable to “U.S. Postal Service.”  You can give your check to John Hammond, and he will pass them on to Mr. Hassell.

 

Popcorn Pick-Up

 

Orders for popcorn will be available for pick-up at Monday’s troop meeting on Nov. 16th.  If you are not able to receive your order on the 16th, please let Mindy Reid know so other arrangements can be made.  The troop is grateful for Mindy serving as our popcorn chair for the past two years.  Thank you, Mindy!
