October is Popcorn Month!

T

roop 227’s largest annual fundraiser is this month when we sell popcorn to raise money to fund our entire year of programming.  Unlike schools which are mostly funded by the government, our entire budget must be funded each year through two fundraisers.  This year we are using the standard prize incentive in which a Scout receives a prize from Trail’s End as well as a weekly prize in which the Scout who sells the most popcorn that week receives a $10 Wal-Mart gift card.

Shiloh National Battlefield Campout -September 22-23

O

ur last campout was at Shiloh Military Park.  We set up camp, had our devotional, and told jokes around the campfire before retiring to our tents.  After Saturday morning breakfast, we measured our pace count to prepare for our orienteering course.  We divided into three groups and set off on a ten-mile hike. Some scouts prepared lunch on the hike for a merit badge requirement.  At about five miles we met at the visitor center where most of us watched a movie of the Battle of Shiloh.  Two groups then continued with the hike.  The first half had been more challenging than expected; so the group of our younger scouts waited at the center to be picked up and driven back to camp.  During their wait, a tremendous downpour came upon the other hikers and Mr. Hammond, who was jogging to retrieve the bus.  When everyone got back to camp, we found many of the tents under water!  We decided the best course of action was to break camp and head home.   We consoled ourselves with dinner - some at Dairy Queen, some at Subway.
