Montgomery Bell State Park

T

his past weekend, the Scouts of Troop 227 packed up Friday evening and headed to the rolling hills of Dickson County, to enjoy a weekend at Montgomery Bell State Park.  With less than 30 minutes of remaining daylight, the troop quickly set up the dining fly and tents.  Then we enjoyed a fine cracker barrel and campfire program.  After retiring one of the troop’s aging American flags, the scouts closed the evening with a devotional.

T

he next morning we charted a course to hike 2.5 miles to the visitor center.  We met with Ranger Eric to learn more about Orienteering.  When the troop arrived back at camp, lunch was delayed for 30 minutes while scouts watched a cicada crawl from its shell to sprout its wings.  After lunch, the boys worked on scouting requirements ranging from building camp gadgets to sharpening an axe.  Later in the day, the troop conducted a conservation project around Lake Woodhaven, with a brief visit to the state park inn.  After a campfire dinner, we end the evening listening to stories around the camp fire, with a closing devotional.

S

unday morning, the scouts cooked a mighty fine black skillet breakfast of eggs, bacon, and sausage.  After packing up the gear, the troop conducted a worship service before heading home, with feelings of satisfaction from a weekend well spent.

Dragon Boat Festival

T

wo of the Scouts who did not go on the outing to Montgomery Bell State Park went downtown to the Dragon Boat Races where they volunteered to help clean up the area where the crowds were watching the races.  The two Scouts who helped in this community service project were Preston and Peyton.  The two Scouts that volunteered that day earned community service hour credits.  Good job, Preston and Peyton!
